Afipsky refinery burns after its seventh drone strike this year

Fire broke out at the Afipsky refinery in Krasnodar after a drone attack overnight on 6 November. By the Moscow Times' count it was the seventh strike on the plant in 2026; estimates of its annual capacity range from 6.25 to 9 million tonnes.

Location: AFIPSKY

According to Euromaidan Press, the Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ reported a likely strike at 04:54 Kyiv time and said the plant was on fire. Krasnodar's regional operations centre said on 6 November that falling drone debris had started a fire at an unnamed enterprise in the settlement of Afipsky, with no injuries. Russia's defence ministry said 142 Ukrainian drones were downed the same night, and flight restrictions were imposed at Krasnodar airport. Damage to refinery equipment could not be verified as of 6 November.

The plant lies about 20 km southwest of Krasnodar and roughly 360 km from the front line. United24 says it produces diesel and petrol components and can process about 6.25 million tonnes of crude; Radio Svoboda gives a declared capacity of more than 9 million tonnes. According to the Kyiv Independent, the EU added the facility to its sanctions list in April 2026. Explosions were reported in Adygea the same night, in the hours running into 6 November, along with power cuts in occupied Crimea.

The campaign is far larger than a single plant. Ukraine's military intelligence agency HUR says that by the end of September 15 of Russia's 38 major refineries had been knocked out and 12 had cut output. HUR puts the fall in refining at these plants at 55.4% since the start of the year; the figures are one-sided and could not be independently verified. Zelensky said on 6 November that Russia had rejected de-escalation steps and that refinery strikes would continue through the winter of 2026.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The seventh strike of the year on Afipsky shows Kyiv keeping Russian fuel supply under pressure ahead of the 10–11 November round in Abu Dhabi. With damage unverified, it is unclear how many days the plant will be offline. The real constraint is not any one facility but repair capacity that cannot keep pace with repeated hits.

Likely effects

  • Russian diesel supplyNegativeWeeks

Repeated outages at diesel-producing plants in the south squeeze product exports from Black Sea ports and domestic supply at the same time.

  • Mediterranean diesel marketNegativeWeeks

Disruption to Russian product exports makes diesel dearer for buyers near the Mediterranean and pushes margins higher.

  • TürkiyeUncertain1–6 months

Disrupted Russian product flows in the Black Sea increase Türkiye's need to diversify suppliers of refined fuel imports.
