Ballistic missiles hit Kyiv two hours after Zelensky's warning about bridges

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, at least 6 ballistic missiles were fired at Kyiv within a few minutes shortly before 23:00 local time on 6 November. The attack came about 2 hours after Zelensky warned of a major strike on bridges and energy facilities.

Location: KYIV

Kyiv Independent reporters described a series of explosions in the city; the air raid alert lasted about 30 minutes, and a new alert sounded shortly before midnight. Kyiv regional governor Tkachenko said a jet-powered drone set a house on fire in Boryspil district, and 1 person pulled from the rubble was taken to hospital. Damage and casualties in the city could not be verified as of midnight on 7 November.

According to the Kyiv Post, Zelensky said on the evening of 6 November that Ukrainian intelligence showed preparations for a new attack that would also target bridges across the Dnipro, and urged allies not to delay Patriot interceptors. Russian drones have repeatedly hit Kyiv's Southern and Northern bridges since 1 October; the Southern Bridge was targeted again on 27 October. According to Major Artem Bilyk, rather than destroying the 2 bridges, Russia forces them to close for inspection and repair after every hit. Russian Chief of General Staff Gerasimov told Putin on 16 October that forces had begun targeting bridges, railways and data centres.

The attack is part of a grid campaign that has intensified in November. According to Ukrenergo, energy facilities were hit more than 20 times in 24 hours on the night of 2–3 November, and 3 DTEK thermal power plants were knocked out. Water was cut in every district of Kyiv on 5 November. Prime Minister Koretsky said on 4 November that Russia sends 300–400 drones a day at critical infrastructure and that more than 2,000 strikes have been recorded since August.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Russia is widening its winter campaign from the grid to bridges and railways; the aim is not destruction but slowing logistics through repeated closures. For Ukraine the binding constraint is its stock of interceptors, and Zelensky's appeal for Patriots makes that plain. The most likely path is for the intensity of attacks to stay high until the 10–11 November round in Abu Dhabi.

Likely effects

  • Kyiv city servicesNegativeWeeks

Cuts to water, trams and trolleybuses recur through the winter, deepening the dispute between the city and central government over responsibility.

  • Military logisticsNegative1–6 months

Repeated closures of the Dnipro bridges lengthen resupply times to the eastern front and add to the burden on the railways.

  • DiplomacyUncertainWeeks

Infrastructure strikes push humanitarian and energy issues to the fore in the Abu Dhabi round and relegate territorial bargaining.
