ASELSAN's GÖKALP interceptor drone destroys target in hit-to-kill test

ASELSAN announced on 10 October that its GÖKALP counter-UAV system destroyed a target drone by direct impact during a demonstration at the Oğulbey Technology Base. The AURA radar detected the target and the DRONEDEF command software passed the data to the GÖKALP E1 interceptor.

Location: ANKARA

Product details cited by Türkiye Today put the system's effective range at more than 1,000 m against Class 1 UAVs and more than 7,000 m against Class 2 and 3 UAVs. The electric interceptors carry a warhead and a proximity sensor, and AI-assisted algorithms are used for detection and engagement. The system comes in two configurations, mounted on a 4x4 vehicle or as a four-radar trailer. According to SavunmaSanayiST, GÖKALP was first unveiled at SAHA 2026 and forms part of the DRONEDEF suite against mini and micro UAVs.

The date of the demonstration, the type of target drone and the engagement range and altitude were not disclosed. Nor is there any information on orders, production schedule or price. The range figures come from the company's product page and were not verified in this test.

The timing of the test matches the direction of the threat. Aydınlık reported on 9 October that 73 merchant ships had been attacked in the Black Sea since January, 52 of them linked to Türkiye; that count could not be independently verified. Aerial and naval drones were used in many of the attacks. Slow, long-range kamikaze drones are precisely the class GÖKALP is designed to counter.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

The GÖKALP test is a concrete Turkish step in the search for a way to meet cheap drones with cheap interceptors rather than expensive missiles. But it was a demonstration, with no order, timeline or engagement data. Drone attacks in the Black Sea are clearly lifting demand. When the system will enter inventory or the export market will remain unclear until an order is announced.

Likely effects

  • Turkish defence industryPositive1–6 months

GÖKALP adds a low-altitude layer against mini and micro UAVs to ASELSAN's DRONEDEF suite; if orders follow, the product also enters the export catalogue.

  • Black Sea maritime securityUncertain1–6 months

Demand for counter-drone cover for ships and ports is growing; no shipborne adaptation of the land-based system has yet been announced.
