Expiring November Brent settles $5 above the December contract
Brent's November contract rose $0.91 to settle at $103.50 on its expiry day, 30 September. The new benchmark December contract stands at $98.03, a gap of $5.47 between the two months. Brent ended September up about 14%.
According to a Reuters summary published on Euronext, November Brent futures rose 0.9% to settle at $103.50 on 30 September. The most actively traded December contract gained 1.9% to $98.03. WTI rose $1.04 to $90.42. Brent's gain of about 14% in September was its biggest monthly rise since July. When near-dated oil trades above later months, a structure known as backwardation, it signals that physical supply is tight today.
According to a Sunday Guardian report based on Reuters, Trump denied reports that he was ready to ease sanctions in return for steps on Iran's nuclear programme. According to BigGo Finance, EIA data on 30 September showed crude stocks up 922,000 barrels. Distillate stocks, however, fell 2.3 million barrels to 105.2 million, and gasoline stocks fell 1.7 million barrels to 204.4 million. The same source says the East-West pipeline is carrying 2.0–2.65 million barrels a day against a capacity of 7 million barrels.
The roll from November to December will show a mechanical drop of about $5 in the headline Brent series from 1 October. That drop reflects the change of contract month, not any easing in the market.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
The $5.47 gap between November and December says the market sees the supply squeeze as a near-term problem, but not one that is over. Falling distillate stocks and an East-West pipeline running below a third of capacity show that tightness persists on the product side. Unless the Iran talks make progress, the near-month premium will not disappear easily.
Likely effects
- Oil price seriesUncertainWeeks
Once the benchmark rolls to December, headline Brent will look about $5 lower; this gap should not be read as a sign of easing.
- Diesel and freightNegativeWeeks
With distillate stocks down to 105.2 million barrels, diesel prices and transport costs stay elevated.
- TürkiyeNegativeWeeks
Brent's 14% rise in September adds pressure to October inflation through fuel prices and the energy import bill.
