Up to 169 killed in 3 days over Yemen's Kahbub heights; casualty figures from the parties and the WHO do not match

According to the Guardian, the Kahbub mountains between Taiz and Lahj provinces became the main front after the Houthis seized the Red Sea coast, including the port of Mocha, in early September. As reported by Red Sea Brief, the Giants Brigades, National Shield forces and Subaiha tribal fighters retook the heights on 18 September; Yemen Monitor wrote that hundreds of Houthis had been killed or wounded, but this figure has not been verified. On 19 September the government said a Houthi field commander and 6 aides had been killed; the Houthis did not confirm this. As reported by Al Jazeera, 118 Houthi fighters and 36 government soldiers have been killed since 20 September in fighting and air strikes in Taiz, Al-Jawf, Marib, Saada and Lahj. The Guardian adds 6 civilians in Mocha and 9 detainees killed in an attack on a prison in Al-Jawf, taking the 3-day total to as many as 169.

On civilian casualties, the only source is the Houthi side. According to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah television, Saudi aircraft carried out at least 157 air strikes in Al-Jawf, Taiz, Saada and Marib on 21 September; 3 strikes on a house in Mocha killed 6 people, including 2 children, and wounded 8. Saudi Arabia did not respond to these claims, and the figures could not be independently verified.

The overall toll also diverges. The World Health Organization recorded 674 deaths and about 3,000 wounded since 6 August, and 164 deaths and 516 wounded between 13 and 18 September alone; the Guardian speaks of about 700 deaths since the start of the offensive. On displacement, the Yemeni government's camps unit counted more than 158,000 people, or about 23,550 families, this month, while the Guardian gives a figure above 100,000 and the International Organization for Migration's mid-September data above 82,000.
