US hits launcher on Qeshm Island but says major campaign not resumed
The US military carried out a limited strike on Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on 2 November. According to 3 US officials, the target was a launcher that had fired missiles at US aircraft. Iranian state media reported 5 explosions on the island. Officials said it did not mark a resumption of major combat operations.
According to NBC, 2 US officials confirmed the strike, and a third described it as a defensive step after the Revolutionary Guards fired surface-to-air missiles at US assets. ABC reported that Iran claimed the same day to have downed 2 RQ-170 reconnaissance drones; a US official said the claim was false. According to ABC, similar limited strikes in recent weeks went unannounced to avoid giving the impression that major operations had resumed. NBC said the last known US strikes were in early September.
The strike coincided with diplomacy. According to NBC, Trump called it a small operation and wrote that Iran wanted a deal as soon as possible. Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf said on 3 November that it was up to the US to prevent war. NBC reported that a third aircraft carrier is heading to the region and that the war has cost the US at least 47 billion dollars.
The market priced the strike. According to CNBC, January Brent rose 0.33% to 105.12 dollars in Asian trading on 3 November when the news broke, a day after falling 7.63%. Qeshm, at the northern mouth of Hormuz, hosts Revolutionary Guards missile and naval bases. Damage and casualties from the strike could not be verified by an independent source.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
Washington is applying two-track pressure, keeping the negotiating table open while quietly striking launchers in the strait. The approach defers a major campaign but leaves the Revolutionary Guards' decision on retaliation uncertain. The most likely path is limited tit-for-tat strikes continuing alongside diplomacy.
Likely effects

Each new strike report partly reverses the diplomacy discount of 2 November and keeps volatility high.
- Hormuz transitNegativeWeeks
Targeting launchers on Qeshm turns the strait's northern mouth into a front line of the US–Iran conflict.
- DiplomacyUncertainWeeks
Leaving the strikes unannounced shows neither side wants to close the negotiating channel.
