Iran's Revolutionary Guards say four tankers hit mines on unauthorised route
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on 29 October that 3 oil tankers had struck mines and caught fire on the unauthorised southern route through Hormuz in the previous 24 hours. Iran's army said a fourth tanker was disabled east of the strait. No tanker names or flags were released, and the claim could not be independently verified.
According to Gulf News, the Revolutionary Guards claimed the 3 tankers had switched off their radar and navigation systems and ignored warnings from the Iranian navy. Iran's army reported the same day that a fourth tanker sailing in a prohibited zone east of the strait had struck a naval mine and caught fire. CBS reported that UKMTO, in a separate incident, said a tanker in Hormuz was hit by a projectile at 19:30 local time with no injuries. UKMTO also said a wooden cargo vessel burned and sank 9 nautical miles north of Khasab in Oman.
A Reuters market report on 29 October relayed the Revolutionary Guards' claim about the 3 tankers; December Brent fell 44 cents that day to settle at 114.88 dollars. CBS said the US military had stated a day earlier that it had cleared the main transit lanes of mines; a Revolutionary Guards spokesman demanded independent evidence for that claim on 29 October. None of the 3 sources reviewed carries a CENTCOM response to the claim of 4 tankers. The profile of tankers that switch off radar and use the southern corridor matches the dark fleet of roughly 230 vessels carrying Gulf exports.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
Even unverified, the choice of target matters. Iran is pointing at the southern corridor that has replaced its own blockaded exports, and at tankers that switch off their radar. Mine risk feeds straight into war premiums and pushes further away the incident-free transits the Joint War Committee needs before narrowing its listed areas. The most likely path is that flows continue, but voyage costs and delays rise in the southern corridor.
Likely effects
- Freight and insuranceNegativeWeeks
The mine claim enters the 24-hour repricing of 7-day war policies and pushes premiums, already 6–10% of hull value, towards the top of the band.
- Gulf exportsNegativeWeeks
If the southern corridor used by the dark fleet comes under threat, national companies slow their sailing schedules and the 11 million barrel-a-day flow comes under pressure.
- TürkiyeNegative1–6 months
As delays and insurance costs persist on Gulf crude and LPG cargoes, Türkiye's energy import bill does not ease even if headline Brent falls.
Possibilities, ranked
- 1Claim unverified, premiums stay high55%
No independent source confirms the 4 tankers; flows continue, but premiums and waiting times stay high in the southern corridor.
Watch: UKMTO and JMIC incident reports for 30 October–2 November
- 2Losses confirmed30%
Tanker names and damage are confirmed independently, and national companies cut sailings through the southern corridor.
Watch: Release of tanker names and flags, and Vortexa's November export data
- 3Mine clearance proven15%
The US presents independent evidence of mine clearance and insurers soften premiums in the southern corridor.
