Houthis claim a strike on Ras Tanura as Riyadh stays silent
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said on 27 October that his forces had hit the Ras Tanura refinery, which processes 550,000 barrels a day, with a ballistic missile. Maritime security firm Vanguard reported a fire in the area the same morning and said it had been contained. As of 27 October, neither Riyadh nor Aramco had confirmed a hit.
Saree wrote on X on 27 October that the missile struck its target and started large fires at the facility. Anadolu Agency said Saudi authorities had not commented on the claim at the time of publication. According to The New Arab, the coalition said the same day it had intercepted three missiles fired at the Eastern Province and two ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh. Anadolu gave the coalition's 27 October count as four drones and three ballistic missiles; the two tallies may cover different time windows.
The source and scale of the fire could not be verified as of 27 October. Vanguard says the fire that broke out in the Ras Tanura area in the early hours of 27 October was brought under control, but the extent of damage and any effect on loadings is unclear. A Cornerstone Futures note citing Bloomberg says the fire broke out near Aramco-operated facilities, and one source said it had been extinguished. The same note says Kpler counted loadings of about 3.6 million barrels a day from Ras Tanura in September. CBS reports that the facility was partly shut after a drone attack in March 2026.
The market priced the claim only modestly on 27 October. According to Cornerstone, December Brent futures stood at 116.12 dollars at 06:30 US time, having recovered an early drop of about 1%. CBS put Brent near 113 dollars that evening; the closing level could not be reconciled between the two sources. An Israel Hayom report carried by WION says Riyadh offered the Houthis 1 billion dollars through Iran. That claim rests on anonymous officials and could not be verified.
Talay assessment
Bottom line
On 26 October the Houthis named the East-West pipeline to the Red Sea as a target, and on 27 October Ras Tanura in the Gulf. Within two days, both outlets for Saudi exports have come under claimed attack. No hit has been confirmed and the fire was contained. The real question is not damage but how much of Ras Tanura's roughly 3.6 million barrels a day of loadings survives in the October data.
Likely effects
- Saudi exportsNegativeWeeks
If loadings falter, Riyadh will want to divert flows to the East-West pipeline, but that line was also named as a target on 26 October; both outlets stay under pressure at once.
- Oil pricesUncertainWeeks
Despite the claim, Brent held in a 113-116 dollar range during 27 October; the market is discounting unverified Houthi claims.
- TürkiyeNegative1–6 months
A lasting disruption to Gulf loadings would raise Türkiye's crude and diesel import bill; every sustained rise in Brent feeds into the current account.
Possibilities, ranked
- 1Limited damage, loadings continue60%
The fire stays outside the facility and October loadings come in close to September's 3.6 million barrels.
Watch: Kpler and Vortexa October loading data for Ras Tanura
- 2Partial disruption confirmed30%
Aramco or tanker tracking shows several days of lower loadings, and prices rebuild the risk premium.
Watch: A statement from Aramco or the Saudi Energy Ministry, and satellite imagery
- 3Repeated strikes10%
The Houthis target Ras Tanura again and the facility is partly shut for the second time since March.
Watch: UKMTO and Vanguard alerts for the Eastern Province
